ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- They're on track with plans to bring commuter rail back to the old city with interest from both JTA and Amtrak to transport North Floridians locally and to South Florida.

"I think it would be great," said Flagler College student Matthew Quann. "I'm from South Florida so it would be pretty easy, I wouldn't have to drive and family could come up and visit."

The Transportation Planning Organization was meeting Thursday to discuss the first stop on the journey to restore commenter rail: picking a place to put a station.

"If we were to create a single center where all these modes could interconnect where might that best location be?," said Jeff Sheffield with the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization.

Right now the TPO has listed six locations as their top picks, including vacant land across from the Northeast Florida Regional Airport, an old Florida East Coast rail terminal off U.S. 1, another vacant lot near the intersection of old Mission Avenue and U.S.1, U.S. 1 and Depot Street, and the intersection of Rodriguez and White streets where a rail spur already exists. The TPO says it's a decision they don't want to make without the public's input.

"We have not selected or narrowed down those locations. We really do want to get public input tonight to see what their perceptions are of those locations and their opinions on it," said Sheffield.
