ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Two people have been arrested at a St. Augustine Motel, accused of running meth lab out of one of the rooms.
About 3:30 a.m., an officer patrolling State Road 16 area near I-95 found a stolen tag on a car in the Days Inn parking lot. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says the officer got out of his patrol car to take a look around the property for anything else that seemed out of the norm. He found people hanging around a room on the second floor. When he approached them, he could smell a very caustic chemical smell associated with meth production.
After confirming there was a meth lab in the room, the officer arrested Eric Messler and Tammy Roy. Deputies say they are boyfriend and girlfriend. Both were decontaminated and taken to jail. A dog found in the room was also decontaminated and taken to Animal Control.
Deputies then took precaution to make sure all families staying in the motel were safe. They began knocking on doors, evacuating 10 rooms during the early morning Hours. "boom, boom, boom. Police said, 'You got to get out now'," says Days Inn guest Larry Zdun. He, along with other guests, will now have to wait to get back clothes and belongings until everything is decontaminated. "I'm kind of ticked that I don't get my room. Kind of ticked that all my food is getting thrown out."
No one was injured.
