ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- When installed properly, smoke detectors can save lives and protect property.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue hopes to increase fire awareness and safety by providing free smoke alarms.

The free devices are provided to residents through SJCFR's outreach program.

The National Fire Protection Association reports that having a working smoke alarm installed correctly in a home can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in fires.

Residents in need of an alarm can call SJCFR at 904-209-0340 or send an email to aland@sjcfl.us.
