ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The St. Johns County school district received an award at this morning's board meeting, for saving millions in energy costs.

Five years ago the district teamed up with Cenergistic, an energy conservation company.  The move helped the district save more than $22 million.

The company was able to do research and find out how to lower energy costs in their schools.

Some ways were as simple as turning off lights and upping the thermostat.

All the money saved has gone, and will continue to go, right back into the schools.

"It's saved teachers jobs first and foremost (and it) saved programs," said St. Johns County School's energy manager Al Crutchfield.

Overall there has been a 45 percent reduction of energy consumption since 2008. The contract with Cenergistic has ended, but county leaders say their goal to save energy and money will continue.
