ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Plans to improve St. Augustine beach are now in the works. County leaders said the plans are part of a four-step process of identifying county needs.

Beachgoers said most of the time the parking issue is a nightmare at the beach.

Looking for a parking spot is a headache fishermen like Brian Baker have gotten accustomed to dealing with at the St. Augustine Beach.

"Parking gets tight, especially when you get events going on over the weekend. I don't know how they would solve the issue," said Baker.

"It sometimes gets crowded here," said Gary Waldo, a fisherman.

St. Johns County leaders are now trying to find a solution to the problem.

Billy Zeits, Beach Services manager, says the county is looking to add more off beach parking sites.

Right now there are only 18 beach parking sites, but Zeits said they're not enough to minimize the overcrowding issue.

"We don't want people driving around in circles for parking or feeling like they need to park illegally. We want to provide them with a nice safe place to park," said Zeits.

Providing that will be expensive. Zeits says it will cost nearly $6 million for parking improvements and expansion.

Taxpayers said it's a bill they don't mind paying.

"If they figure out how to spread the taxes minimally across the board, it'd be fine," said Baker.

Zeits told Action News there's no particular timeline for the projects, but they're looking to do something as soon as possible.
