JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- JEA is facing a bill of their own, that's according to the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners.
According to a cover letter and invoice addressed to John Germany, attorney for the City of Jacksonville, county commissioners are concerned about a million-dollar debt owed to St. Johns County.
St. Johns County calculates JEA owes them more than $1.3 million.
Action News has learned it all dates back to 2001 when JEA first began providing service in parts of St. Johns County.
We took the invoice straight to JEA but the utility declined to explain the matter further.
"Currently JEA and St. Johns County are in confidential mediations and it would be inappropriate for me to comment at this time," said Gerri Boyce, a spokesperson for JEA.
St. Johns County also declined to comment on the matter.
According to one county leader, this is money owed to the taxpayers and the outstanding balance won't cost them any additional money.
St. Johns County hopes mediation will help resolve the issue. If not, the county plans to use all available options.
On Thursday, attorneys for St. Johns County are expected to have a phone conference with Germany to discuss the next step.
