MAYPORT, Fla. -- The St. Johns River Ferry resumed normal operations Monday at 6 a.m., after being dry docked for more than a week.
A hole in the boat's hull forced emergency repairs to be performed, and the Coast Guard approved the repairs over the weekend.
In two weeks, JAXPORT is handing ferry operations over the Ferry Commission because the cost to maintain the service has become too high. However, JAXPORT agreed to cover the cost of the repairs, which could exceed $10,000.
"The Jacksonville Port Authority still owns and operates the vessel so we will take responsibility for it," said Nancy Rubin, spokesperson.
Rubin says Jaxport wants the ferry to continue, and is doing what they can to make that possible.
"We really feel at the port authority that we've been working very closely with the cities commission to make a smooth transition to ensure that the operation continues for the people who depend on it everyday."
The Ferry Commission will take over on October 1, and the cost will rise by $1 at that time.
