St. Johns River Ferry returns Saturday for service
MAYPORT, Fla. -- The St. John's River Ferry returned to service Saturday, after a nearly six-week long maintenance period.
The mandatory inspection and maintenance was required by the United States Coast Guard and forced the ferry to be dry-docked in early Decmeber.
During this time period, drivers were forced to take the Dames Point Bridge as a detour to get from one side of the St. Johns River to another.
As a thank you to riders, operators say they are offering free rides on Sunday for all ferry travelers.
Supporters say ferry services have existed in the Mayport region since 1894.
