PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- One part of the President's plan to stop the violence has nothing to do with weapons. It will unfold in front of mental health professionals like Dr. Lynn Wadelton.
"In the hands of somebody who is not healthy, guns do a lot of damage," said Dr. Wadelton.
President Obama wants to increase access to mental health care by training 5,000 additional mental health professionals.
But Dr. Wadelton says it's not the number of professionals, but what they can do that needs to change.
"Our hands are tied. We are only allowed to report people who actually make a threat. We can't report people that we are concerned about or do we have the ability to watch them all the time," said Dr. Wadelton.
President Obama also wants every state to have a crisis support services. And he wants to continue research.
"People never want to spend the money and maybe now people will say we finally do have to. Because we've seen enough children die in this country," said Dr. Wadelton.
Right now the government is budgeting $155 million toward those reforms. Dr.Wadleton hopes it gets people the help they need before more people get hurt.
