JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Stormy weather caused dozens of delays and cancellations at Jacksonville International Airport Thursday.

Heavy storms bearing down from the Northeast has threw a wrench into travel plans for some.

"The delays and the rain has been a pain in our neck," said Aleesa Solberg.

Solberg told Action News she is just ready to get back home to Colorado.
She said she came to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl.
But the stormy weather is making it hard for her to get home.

"We're headed back to Denver hopefully, but we have to go through Chicago and we're already on a two-hour delay," Solberg said.

Several flights to Chicago, Newark, and New York were cancelled because of the storms.

"Whether the weather is good or bad, it's still bad, it's still very important that you check with your airlines because it could be sunny and bright here and your aircraft could be effected coming from a location," Jacksonville International Airport's Michael Stewart said.

Stewart said its normal to see delays and cancellations in the stormy weather but its mainly for safety.

"Air traffic control puts extra spacing between flights taking off and landing and that will cause delays in the system, and that extra spacing is for safety reasons, and obviously more important than time performance," Stewart said.

Jennifer Johnson said she just hopes the weather doesn't keep her from getting home soon.

"I would like to get home. I've been here since Saturday and I'm ready to go home," she said.
