JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- You may have noticed them already. Video message boards are popping up along road sides in Jacksonville.

Action News has learned these message boards that currently read "FDOT TEST MSG" are being installed with federal money by the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization.

The TPO agency's Executive Director, Jeff Sheffield says these "dynamic detouring" signs are the first of their kind in Florida.

"Instead of paying to widen roads, technology is being used get more out of the road," said Sheffield.

The electronic signs have been spotted along several I-95 off ramps, along Baymeadows Road and University Boulevard. But as the message reads, they're just in the "test" phase before these dynamic detour boards become operational in the Fall.

"It's just recognizing that the use of technology is really going to allow us to advance how we move traffic on the roadways," said Sheffield.

During incidents, the message boards that are only about three feet tall will be able to display varying directional displays to detour traffic off an interstate, help drivers navigate roads they may not know, then lead them back on the highways past an accident or construction.

"If we need to direct them in another direction, those signs can be adjusted to direct them left instead of right," said Sheffield.

The system will also coordinate with traffic signals on detour routes.
