JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dozens of students from 13 schools competed in the Special Olympics Summer Games.

The games took place at Atlantic Coast High School, and featured the traditional torch run.

The top competitors will move on to the area games, but families here say every student walks away a winner.

"It gives them hope," said Robin Bryant, a local mother. "It gives them enjoyment and they like to be around other people that can feel their joy, and they're treated as equals. They are treated the way everyone wants to be treated."

More than 18,000 athletes compete in the Special Olympics in Florida every year.
