BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Georgia State Patrol said on Sunday, January 5th, a teenager contemplating suicide crashed his vehicle into another car causing a chain reaction. That crash killed Renee Dowdy and left her husband, Darryl Dowdy, clinging to life at UF Health.

The driver, 19-year-old Kyle Casimir, now faces vehicular homicide charges.

Renee Dowdy’s sister and brother-in-law spoke to Action News about the incident and how they’re moving forward.

Michelle Russell said her sister Renee Dowdy never made it to church because of the accident. Dowdy’s husband is in critical condition, and the family is praying he pulls through.

“We're going back and forth to Jacksonville to let him know that we love him and we got to get him well,” said Russell.

Renee Dowdy was well known for volunteering throughout the community, and her brother-in-law Johnnie Russell said he’s still in shock.

“We're going to miss her. We're numb now, you know, we're just beginning to get over this, but we love her,” said Russell.

When asked if the family had a message for the suicidal teen driver, there was silence, then a prayer.

“On both sides, nobody wins. We, I just pray that that he learns from this and gets himself together,” said Johnnie Russell.

The family added this crash didn't have to happen, if Casimir would have reached out to someone for help.

“She met no strangers. She was loving and kind and she would do anything she could to help you. We're going to miss that cause she was our family rock. The glue that held things together -- and now the glue is gone,” said Michelle Russell.

The family is asking for the public’s prayers for the teenage driver, for Mr. Dowdy to recover quickly, and for their grieving hearts. Renee Dowdy will be laid to rest Saturday.
