JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A swimmer is being treated for life-threatening injuries after nearly drowning in a Southside retention pond.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the man was swimming with friends at the The Palms Apartments.

He and another man decided to race from one end of retention pond to the other. During the race, he became distressed and went under. Police say the men had been drinking.

The victim is 25 or 26 according to police and was taken to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville where he is in critical condition.
