JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police have arrested the teen mother of an abandoned newborn.
Amber Aundriana Collins, 15, faces child neglect charges, a second-degree felony.
Police say Collins left the baby wrapped in a towel in front of an abandoned apartment on Monument Road. A witness discovered the baby and called police.
Police took the baby to the hospital where doctors determined the newborn to be only hours old.
Amber's mother called police yesterday to say she thought her daughter had given birth to the baby.
Police interviewed the girl today who admitted to leaving the baby at the vacant apartment.
According to the Department of Children & Families, the baby is doing fine and is in the custody of a foster family.
Florida has a
Safe Haven Law that allows a parent to leave a child 7-days or younger at a hospital, emergency medical station, or fire station without any recourse.
