JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's a scheme to steal gas that you have to see to believe.

Crooks rigged the pumps at three stations to get free gas for days. Gas prices are hurting everyone at the pump. "It affects the budget, especially if you have to go from one side of town to the other," said driver Lee Bond.
But it's not just consumers feeling the pain at the pump. According to a police report, gas station owners are too. Crooks rigged a fuel pump at three different area Kangaroo gas stations. In just three days at one station on St. Johns Bluff, nearly 100 people stole gas. It totaled about $10,000.

With high prices, more gas thefts isn't a surprise to drivers like Harley Bennett, but the way the crooks did it was a surprise. The police say someone somehow rigged a pump and put a yellow out of service bag over it. But then people pulled up to it, still able to fill up without employees ever knowing they weren't paying. Police say employees thought people were just paying with credit cards.

So now, the hunt is on to figure out who rigged the pumps. For consumers like Bennett, he worries high prices will only make matters worse. "It makes it hard to do anything. No one can afford to go anywhere," said Bennett.

Police don't really have a description of the suspect. They are reviewing surveillance video from the store. Anyone with information is asked to called Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

and most stations have cameras,, so i don't advise trying it... because they will get your tag and the po po will come a knockin on your door !!! tempting if you can get away with it,, just not worth going to jail over $4.00 gas !!!!

some pay at the pump pumps can be turned on by inserting your debit/credit card reverse of the way it tells you to... this activates the pump yet doesn't activate the meter.. net result is free gas due to $000.00 reading on the pump !!! i'm sure since this became an issue in early january of this year most stations have fixed their pumps to this scheme... most but not all !!!
