JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Department of Transportation announced Thursday that toll roads will be installed on I-295 by 2016 or 2017.
Three new lane expansion projects are planned for different parts of I-295. The Department of Transportation plans to expand those portions of I-295 from six lanes to eight lanes.
All existing lanes on I-295 will remain free. The tolls will only apply to the new lanes, one in each direction, and they will act as express lanes to help with traffic flow.
The toll lanes will be installed from the Buckman bridge to I-95, from Dames Point bridge to I-95 and from Butler Boulevard to Florida 9B.
There will be no toll booths, the lanes will be electronically monitored. The system is similar to Sun Pass lanes on I-95 in Miami and on I-85 in Atlanta.
The cost of the project had not been determined yet.
