JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The attorney for the family of slain teenager Trayvon Martin issued a statement to the family of Jordan Davis as jury deliberations continue in the Michael Dunn trial.
The Martin family waited for several days as the jury deliberated the case against George Zimmerman also prosecuted by a team from State Attorney Angela Corey's office.
Attorney Benjamin Crump released this statement Saturday:
Nelson Mandela once said, “may your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” The killing of 17 year old Jordan Davis is yet another reminder that in Florida, racial profiling and stereotypes may serve as the basis for supposititious fear and the shooting and killing of young teenagers. No matter the verdict, the fact that Ron and Lucia will never see their son again will not change; we know that pain all too well. We walk with Jordan in defining his legacy to reflect our hopes by advancing love and tolerance in his memory, and continuing the fight against unjust gun laws.
The jury ultimately acquitted Zimmerman of second-degree murder in the shooting. Zimmerman claimed he killed Trayvon in self-defense.
The jury in the Jordan Davis case has been deliberating for at least 27 hours without a decision.
