JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A judge has set a trial date for Jacksonville's youngest murder suspect.
The trial for 13-year-old Cristian Fernandez will begin on March 4, 2013. The defense wanted an earlier trial date, one beginning in November. The judge in the case declined that request, saying other trials interfered with that time frame.
Fernandez is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his younger brother, David.
David was 2-years-old when he died of severe head trauma. Investigators say Cristian beat his brother, while David was in his care.
Cristian, who is now 13, is the youngest person to be tried as an adult for murder in Jacksonville's history. He is also facing unrelated child sex abuse charges.
Cristian's mother, Bianella Susana is scheduled to be sentenced January 8, 2013. Susana pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and faces 30 days in prison for waiting hours to get help for her dying son.
