Tropical Storm Leslie expected to become a hurricane

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Tropical Storm Leslie is strengthening over the waters in the open Atlantic, but it is not expected to threaten the United States.

As of 5 a.m. EST, the system was located 940 miles east of the Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds at 65 mph. It is moving west at 16 mph.

The storm is expected to slow down and move northeast of the Lesser Antilles. Additional strengthening is forecast. Leslie could be a hurricane tonight.

Tropical storm force winds extend 70 miles from the center.
