JACKSONVILLE -- Homeowners in Jacksonville are turning on the lights in a more efficient way. JEA says they have replaced three million standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).

JEA started a rebate program in 2008 to encourage its customers to use the energy efficient bulbs. Those interested in the program can go to the ShopSmart section of jea.com to find a list of local stores participating in the program, as well as a list of all the rebate programs.

Energy experts say CFLs are four times more efficient and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. JEA reports the reduction in energy use is enough to power 7,100 homes over the course of a year. Each light prevents more than 450 pounds of greenhouse emissions, according to the utility company.
