HOLLISTER, Fla. -- The Putnam County Sheriff's Office arrested two women on cruelty to animal charges. One horse died, another had to be put down.

The investigation started in 2012 and revealed that Rael Shope and Jacqueline Gates were likely responsible for the treatment of horses that left several unhealthy and malnourished.

One horse died due to neglect.  Another horse had to be euthanized.

The other horses were rescued by Animal Control Officers and relocated to a foster home where they are being rehabilitated.

Both Shope and Gates are charged with multiple instances of Felony Cruelty to Animals.
