JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- U.S. Sen Bill Nelson is celebrating the holidays in Jacksonville.
Nelson stopped at The Clara White Mission to feed the homeless and homeless veterans breakfast.
Veteran James Prince stops by the mission a couple of times a week and was very happy to see Nelson.
"At least somebody's here. I thank the Lord for him," said Prince.
"What better way than to try to give back to the community? Because we are so blessed," said Nelson.
This isn't Nelson’s first time at Clara White, and he says he doesn't want to make it his last.
He knows the mission does a lot to help veterans like Prince get back up on their feet; something he supports.
"At the end of the day, we just can't do enough for our veterans, because so many of them have paid the ultimate sacrifice," said Nelson.
Mission leaders tell Action News the number of homeless and homeless veterans they serve grows every day.
They say on good days, the mission serves around 400 meals, on bad days, it could skyrocket to 550.
Prince says he is happy to know someone like Nelson cares and will not only lend that helping hand, but will listen to their needs as well.
"All the help we can get would be appreciated. A lot of things we need, we can't do for ourselves," said Prince.
Nelson says he hopes to continue this tradition for years to come.
