JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The president of UNF says the school does not have enough students to support a football team.
UNF President John Delaney says the decision was a tough one, but he feels it's the right one for UNF. In his announcement to the community he said, "After much financial examination, we have concluded that we just can't make it work... when we explored the feasibility within the budget constraints, the numbers simply didn't add up."
Right now, UNF has about 16,000 students. The school says it would need about 25,000 students to properly support a team. Delaney says he believes the school will eventually get a team, but says it will likely not happen anytime soon.
The school says it will continue to develop a sports and recreation area that could eventually accommodate Osprey football in the future.
