JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville is celebrating a big military milestone Thursday. The US Navy 4th Fleet
, based at Naval Station Mayport, has officially been back in service for five years.
The command has a longstanding history. It was originally established in 1943 during World War II. It was the command in charge of protecting against raiders and enemy subs in the South Atlantic.
The fleet worked its mission for seven years before being disestablished in 1950 when it was no longer needed. The fleet essentially sat dormant until it was reestablished in 2008. It's primary mission now is maritime security in the Caribbean, Central and South America.
"The 4th fleets' presence here has only helped increase our city's good will," said Mayor Alvin Brown Thursday.
Due to recent budget cuts and sequestration, the 4th Fleet is now working to find ways to do more with less. Right now, the fleet is exploring ways to continue counter drug operations with less funding.
