JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A jury convicted Leephor Spivey on Wednesday evening on one count of Attempted Manslaughter with a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Spivey, 51, was arrested by police minutes after he shot his nephew, Bryan Williams, on New Year's Day. The 2012 shooting stemmed from an argument Spivey had with his nephew at a family birthday celebration. Williams was shot three times - twice in the torso and once in the arm. He spent two months in the hospital due to his injuries.

After the shooting, Spivey fled the scene and threw the handgun, used in the crime, into a storm drain. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Evidence Technicians were able to recover the weapon in the drain.

"This Defendant's spiteful crime was committed on a member of his own family. This Defendant shed the blood of a person he shared blood with solely because he was angry and intoxicated," said Assistant State Attorney Janeen Mira.

Spivey is considered a Habitual Felony Offender with felony convictions for DUI and Aggravated Assault. He faces 30 years in prison. Spivey will be sentenced the week of December 3, 2012.
