Power restored after underground fire in downtown Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Utility crews have finished restoring power to Gainesville after an underground transformer fire that took out power in a six-block area.
The fire broke out before 9:30 p.m. Thursday at a transformer at 100 NW 1st St.
A Gainesville Fire Rescue spokesman says when firefighters arrived on scene they saw smoke coming from the manhole cover. The fire caused a power outage for about six blocks from the intersection of Main Street and University Avenue. People were asked to evacuate the area.
Gainesville Regional Utilities restored the power a short time later. GRU is investigating the cause of the transformer malfunction.
No injuries were reported.
