Union County Sheriff Jerry Whitehead passes away
UNION COUNTY, Fla. -- The longest-serving sheriff in the state of Florida has died.
Sheriff Jerry Whitehead died of cardiac failure Wednesday afternoon, one day after being hospitalized for a brief illness.
Whitehead was elected in 1984 and began serving Union County as sheriff the following year.
"He was just a friend to everybody," said Maj. Gary Seay at a news conference outside the Sheriff's Office. "Our hearts are heavy."
Whitehead's father served as Union County sheriff from 1953 to 1984.
