PONTE VEDRA BEACH Fla. -- The weather is wonderful and the scoring conditions are too at round one of THE PLAYERS.
Roberto Castro opens up with a sizzling course record tying 9 under par 63.
That is good enough midway through the day for a 3 shot lead over Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson.
Castro started on the back 9 and birdied 16, 17 and 18.
The 27 year-old played his college golf at Georgia Tech and ties Greg Norman and Fred Couples with the 63.
"I played with Kuchar yesterday, which helped because obviously the guy has gone around the course and won. 17, I was nervous today. First time playing the hole. I'm sure even the 100th you're nervous."
Castro didn't have to make a lot of putts because he was hitting it to two or three feet. That is the recipe for success at THE PLAYERS. McIlroy has never made the cut here but is tied for second after a 66. "This year it's sort of been a couple of good days and a bad day...I'm starting to get the consistency back in it, which is a good thing." McIlroy added that he only hit driver three times, on 11, 16 and 14.
Johnson, like McIlroy and Castro, birdied 16 and 17. It was a 7 birdie one bogey round for the former Masters Champion. Tiger Woods had one birdie on the day midway through his round. Phil Mickelson was 2 under par after 8 holes. We are live from THE PLAYERS on Action News on CBS47 starting at 5 p.m.. Hope to see you in sports around 6:22.
