JACKSONVILLE Fla.-- Carolyn Woods' pain of losing her son Julian in the Iraq War eight years ago was only deepened on Veterans day.

Woods was forced to pick up the pieces of her heart all over again as she also picks up the pieces of her son's memorial wreath, destroyed Sunday morning while she was at church.

"The very first thing I thought was oh my goodness, who would come up here and do such a thing," said Woods. "They just destroyed it, I mean came in my yard and stood there and destroyed that wreathe that was given to me and my family."

Julian Woods died trying to save another soldier's life, and the wreath was meant to be a symbol of his sacrifice. For his mother Carolyn, seeing it destroyed was like hearing the news of her son's death all over again.

"The wreath, it may be small but that cut me today," she said. "It's almost as if it was worse than when the navy came up here to tell us he had died."

But even through her pain, woods has no ill will towards the people who disgraced her son's honor, all she has is one request.

"Whoever did it that's all I want is an apology," she said.

The incident remains under investigation. Police are treating it as criminal mischief.

Carolyn, I am so sorry to see that someone with an empty heart did such a thing. Please know that are still many strangers who never got to meet your Hero that will forever remember the sacrifice he paid for our freedom.

I am sorry for the loss of your son. Whoever did this has no idea of the magnitude of your hurt.
