SANFORD, Fla. -- Late Saturday night, jurors found George Zimmerman not guilty in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

The announcement came after the jury asked for a clarification on manslaughter and took an hour dinner Friday evening.

"May we please have clarification on the instructions regarding manslaughter," Judge Debra Nelson read from the jurors' note before a courtroom that had rapidly filled up with lawyers, reporters and members of the families of Martin and Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, 29, was charged with second-degree murder but jurors also had the options of finding him guilty of manslaughter or not guilty. He pleaded not guilty, claiming he shot Martin in self-defense.

NAACP Statement

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People released the following statement on the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin:

NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock:

“Today, justice failed Trayvon Martin and his family,” said Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP. “We call immediately for the Justice Department to conduct an investigation into the civil rights violations committed against Trayvon Martin. This case has re-energized the movement to end racial profiling in the United States.”

NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous:

“We are outraged and heartbroken over today’s verdict,” said Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP. “We stand with Trayvon’s family and we are called to act. We will pursue civil rights charges with the Department of Justice, we will continue to fight for the removal of Stand Your Ground laws in every state, and we will not rest until racial profiling in all its forms is outlawed.”

NAACP Florida State Conference President Adora Obi Nweze:

“We lost a young man due to senseless violence, but justice did not prevail,” said Adora Obi Nweze, President of the Florida NAACP State Conference. “Last year we pushed for the arrest of George Zimmerman and a thorough investigation and trial. Today, we are still called to act. No one should be allowed to use this law to commit a senseless crime again.”

This is the last comment I'm going to say about this horrible night. IF mom and dad had been STUCK to their 'wayward' son that night, he would still be alive. THE SYSTEM IS NOT SET UP TO HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. Either he's is a 'neglected' MINOR, who was allowed to run the streets when he was already getting in trouble with NO PARENTS ENSURING HE WAS NOT, OR HE IS ANOTHER YOUNG 'MAD THUG WANNA BE' OUT RUNNING THE STREETS GETTING CAUGHT UP INTO MORE TROUBLE with creepy ass crackers or other thug Black men... The evidence showed the latter, and THIS MOM AND DAD FAILED THEIR SON. They allowed him to get caught up into something he could not handle. He was bigger than most men, even Zimmerman and by his own words, looking for another fight. These parents got millions before THEY EVER GOT JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON, NOW THEY WANT MORE., with absolutely NO accountability for what they allowed to happen to Trayvon that sad night. My Prayer is that they place the blame where it belongs, with themselves, and quit trying to blame everyone else. Obama has misled them and incited hatred in their hearts and they can riot and loot all they want, but that SAME MINDSET is why Trayvon is not here.IT ALL STARTS AT HOME, IF YOU CLAIM TO BE A LAW ABIDING 'FAMILY' of God's. Where was Trayvon's family, when they KNEW he was getting in trouble? WHERE? My 17 year old son's 'skittles and drink' would be in my fridge, if he was 'messing up and getting suspended, etc', not dropped off at someone else house'. END OF STORY.

For someone whose avatar is 'commonsense', you sure are dumb. Blacks are killing blacks left and right, WHY do you think we are arming ourselves? If blacks hate themselves SO much they only whine and cry foul when they THINK a white man killed a black man, there is something BLANTANTLY wrong with the Black race. Something psycological, and to constantly bring up the race card , shows after 100's of years, Blacks refuse to get over the past. They have all the freedoms of the rest of us, but they still want to call a man defending himself from a bitter black boy, another act of 'oppression'. Seriously? GET OVER IT, OR GET HELP. No-one has any control today of the bad things that happened in the past, and NONE of us were there with Zimmerman or Trayvon that night. People SEEN the arguing and NOBODY stepped in to help or stop it... But to hang on hate and let it fester, reproduces offspring that are angry and rebellious. Black or White, we ALL have crosses to bear just as our Savior. The best thing I have heard out of this entire deal, was when the Black community stated to get mad or revenge over the verdict would 'dishonor' Trayvon's memory...As a mother and grandmother, I would THINK that is what Trayvon would want., no more hatred and violence.

Headlines: BLACK MAN SHOOTS UNARMED 17YEAR OLD WHITE KID. Do u think, HONESTLY, a jury would come back with a not guilty verdict? That's what type of punk ass justice system we live in. If a black man shoots an unarmed white kid the police would kill him on the spot.

The silliest thing I heard throughout this trial was when the defense attorney had the nerve to say that had it been a black man he would have never been charged. You are right dumb dumb. The police would have killed him on the spot. A question to the delusional attorney; Since when do black men get away with shooting ANYONE, let alone unarmed white boys?

Why does everything have to be used as a race card. The naacp are ignorant. Like my sisters Boyfriend said "If two black men went out and had the same thing happen this case would have been open and shut, but because Zimmerman was a Hispanic man it turned into a race issue." Why does anything like that have to be a race issue, Black men are more racist than a white man. Atleast From what Ive seen and I have black and white friends.

It amazes me that the lack of common sense is so plentyful in America. First off u have to be a pure coward to pursue someone with a gun then cry self defense after u get your behind whipped. Zimmerman went bothering aomeone who was doing nothing wrong. He got his punk ass beat. He should have taken the ass whipping like a man because he started it. Instead he committed murder. I'm curious to see how this punk ass country acts when a black man shoots and kills a white boy. Think he will get the same verdict?

killing another human being is a down right shame be it black or white. we had the jury trial. they found him not guilty, but people still do not believe in the system. where you there? chance's you weren't. the same old story you have the people who do not believe in our system and can't accept the verdict.
