SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Vice President Joe Biden praised Savannah and its port Monday.

"Your city is on the move in a way few cities in America are," he said to a large crowd listening at the Port of Savannah.

The Georgia port has been fighting to deepen its waterways 7 feet for 14 years. As Biden boasted, they're making major headway. Their project has already been approved by Congress.

That means JAXPORT could soon be left in Savannah's shipping wake if it doesn't dredge, too. An Army Corps of Engineers study is still under way, so it still hasn't gotten the green light to deepen the St. Johns.

But Biden says dredging has become more critical than ever to accommodate larger ships.

"They can't operate with consistency in ports that are 42 feet deep unless you're in high tide and they're fully loaded," he said.

If JAXPORT doesn't dredge, it would lose business to other major ports like Savannah that plan to.

"We need the most modern infrastructure in the world to accommodate that and it starts here right here in Savannah, Ga."
