JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Seven people went to the hospital after a crash on I-295 on the Southside.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a car pulled over to help a man walking along the highway just before 8 p.m. Sunday.
A second car hit the first car, sending it into the pedestrian, identified as 37-year-old Paul M. Carney of Jacksonville. Authorities do not know why Carney was walking in the emergency lane of the interstate.
Ricardo and Ana Andreu went to UF Health with serious injuries. Their 3-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries.
Christina Leeds, 30, and Robert Bryson, 36, went to UF Health with critical injuries. They were in the second car. Bryson's 6-year-old son also sustained critical injuries. FHP said the boy was unrestrained in the back seat of the vehicle, and the two adults were not wearing seat belts. The boy has been upgraded to fair condition.
Charges are pending in the crash. Investigators are not sure if it's alcohol related.
