VILANO BEACH Fla.-- It may be a no wake zone, but boats are speeding past the Vilano Pier on the intracoastal, making waters too rough and too dangerous to dock the Vilano Water Taxi.

"Safety is number one," said Water Taxi captain, Brooks Mitchell.

Mitchell says it's gotten so dangerous he's been forced to suspend his taxi service, putting part of his business underwater.

"Between the advertising and the fairs and the marketing and all that thousands of dollars over the last couple of months," he said.

But he says he doesn't blame these boaters, he blames the state for not fixing the real problem. No wake zone markers have drifted out of place where boaters can't see them in time to slow down.

He says the markers are meant to be 500 feet from the Vilano bridge, and right they are only 300 feet from the bridge, not giving boaters proper warning to slow down.

"They need to go back to where they're supposed to be," said Mitchell.

The captain says state officials promised to move the buoys months ago, but they haven't.

Action News reached out to several local lawmakers to find out why. Like Mitchell, we are still waiting to hear back from them.

"I keep getting promises, promises, promises and all anybody has to do is just get to the buoy pick it up move it to the right place put it back down and end of story," he said.

The Taxi is suspended until further notice, but Jax Water Tours will still be offering tours up and down the intracoastal.
