JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A new sign for the Interstate 95/JTB interchange has been sidelined due to a spelling error.

WOKV's Mike Dorwart first took a photo of the sign that's sitting on the side of the road, and not hanging where it should be.

"Florida" is misspelled both times as "Flordia" and ironically it is a sign that promotes the exit as being the way to a university and a college. The interstate sign with spelling errors is on the shoulder of I-95 near the Butler Blvd. exit.

"For some reason it was misspelled at the plant, it came down here and that's when we caught it," said Mike Goldman with the Florida Department of Transporation.

Goldman says the sign was made by out-of-state contractor.

The FDOT had already realized the mistake when the signs were delivered and had left them by the side of the road while they waited on replacements.

"Because obviously it's easier to catch a mistake when it's on the ground than after you put it up."

Goldman says the sign should be fixed by next week and the company that made the signs will correct the mistakes.

Action News has learned the contractor or subcontractor will pick up the tab to fix the typos, not the taxpayer. Goldman stresses the plan sent by FDOT to the sign company had the correct spelling of our state.

FDOT is spending $3.6 million to replace 38 signs along a stretch of I-95.

"The signs have to be replaced to so they can withstand wind strengths and make them more visible for seniors."

this is what results from hiring illeagel aliens to save a few bucks.. we're lucky it wasn't spelled in espanol, or some other foreign language... typical of flordia...

Wouldn't you think SOMEONE would have noticed long before it reached its destination?

It should be okay as most of the UNF and FSC students probably won't know the difference.
