JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A cashier was arrested on New Year’s Day, accused of stealing money and gift cards from the store where she worked.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was called to the Walmart at 8808 Beach Blvd. in Jacksonville on Tuesday after a loss prevention employee reported an investigation into drawer shortages and suspicious gift card transactions at the suspect’s register.

The loss prevention employee says surveillance video and other documentation showed Altina Leonda Smith had activated gift cards on several occasions without paying for them. Smith is also accused of giving the cards to a man and woman and giving those same people large amounts of cash back during various purchases.

The 26-year-old Smith admitted to the transactions. She was arrested and charged with employee theft.
