JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hundreds of sailors and their families are making Jacksonville their new home.

They docked their ship, the USS New York at Naval Station Mayport on Friday.

But moving to a new state can be a difficult transition.

That's why the Fleet and Family Support Center stepped up to help.

They set up tent right near the dock, ready to greet sailors as they came off the ship.

"Because they're new to the area they don't know what Mayport has to offer and that's what we're here for," said Fleet and Family Support Center spokesperson Marlene Alfaro.

Alfaro says they will help sailors find homes to live in, assist with monetary needs and find their children a place to go to school.

More families equals more money flowing into the city.

"I think it will be great for Jacksonville right now we have here hundred coming here and next ear there is going to be a few more hundred and the city of Jacksonville is going to benefit a lot," said Alfaro.

Officers at Mayport agree.

They say once the soldiers start becoming involved in the community community, the economic impact on base and in Jacksonville will be visible.
