JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- We've seen it before. Flames licking tree tops and smoke clouding the air. And thanks to this recent cold snap and the low humidity that came with it, Mike Work with the Division of Forestry says we're experiencing perfect wildfire weather.
He says we need some rain, and a bunch of it. "The rains are coming with the fronts," he said. "Then the following day, it's 26-degrees in the morning when you wake up. Frosty, dry, high winds. And it sucks all the moisture out that we got the previous day."
The latest
wildfire danger map puts almost every county in our area at a "high" risk of wildfires. Bradford, St. Johns, and Flagler are the only ones in our area not in that category. They are listed as "moderate."
In an effort to be proactive, the Division of Forestry is conducting prescribed burns, burning off dead vegetation that acts as wildfire fuel. But they're only doing it specific areas that can be easily controlled. And they're watching the weather closely, hoping the fire danger subsides.
