PALATKA, Fla. -- A woman from Putnam County is in jail accused of stealing more than $20,000 from disabled adults.
Tammi Marie Carnes faces one count of organized scheme to defraud, and 13 counts of exploitation.
Carnes owned O'Carroll Homes, a company that ran group homes for disabled adults. Investigators say she stole money from 13 disabled adults and used it to buy gift cards and pay off credit card debt.
If convicted on all charges, Carnes faces up to 80 years in prison and $75,000 in fines.
"Stealing money from people with disabilities is not only morally reprehensible, but also it is illegal. My Medicaid Fraud Control Unit has arrested this woman, and she now faces significant prison time," stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.
O'Carroll Homes Inc. was closed by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities in April of 2011.
