JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- MacKenzie Worthley has scratches on her face, bruised knees and four staples in her head. Despite her pain, she says she is thankful she is still here.
Worthley told Action News "I feel like I shouldn't have made it."
Worthley says Edward Marshall-Byrd sexually assaulted her in Jacksonville Beach early Friday Morning.
Jacksonville Beach Police say Marshall-Byrd asked for directions, then hit her and reached down her pants on 1st Avenue North.
MacKenzie did not want to go into all the details, but tells Action News she was not going down without a fight.
Worthley says a witness, Alfred Gainer, was her saving grace.
He heard her screaming for help, and called police. Worthley added "I'm really grateful he was in the right place at the right time."
Worthley always thought she was safe in her community, but wants people to know who she is for one reason: Sexual assault can happen to anyone.
Edward Marshall-Byrd is a sailor based at Mayport. He was arrested a block away from where the crime happened.
A Duval County judge denied bond for Edward Marshall-Byrd Saturday.
He is expected to make his first court appearance on May 6th.
