JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville woman will spend life in prison for the 2010 kidnapping and murder of an 83-year-old man.

Shanda Merritt, 36, pleaded guilty to charges of murder in the first degree, kidnapping and armed robbery of Charles Soukup. Merritt was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In October 2010, Merritt and three men kidnapped Soukup from Jacksonville International Airport. One of those men, Raymond Austin then strangeled and shot Soukup for his rental car.

Life in prison is useless if you are going to be eligible for parole. The death penality would eliminate that possibility.
