Worker dies in plant fire

LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A worker at the Anderson Columbia asphalt plant is dead after an explosion occurred in one of the company's diesel tanks.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, an explosion occurred at 871 Northwest Guerdon Street early Monday morning. Upon arrival, rescue units found that Perry Polland, 30, had been killed during the explosion.

The State Fire Marshall and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are assisting with the investigation. It is unknown at this time what caused the explosion. 

No other workers were injured and the explosion did not threaten the plant or the surrounding neighborhood.

The investigation in active and ongoing.
