JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A woman has filed a wrongful death complaint against the City of Jacksonville.
Kerrie Merrifield is taking to the internet in hopes of getting justice for her father. She's posting videos on Youtube talking about her father's death.
In a lawsuit filed two weeks ago, Merrifield claims her father died in JSO custody because he wasn't taken properly taken care of.
According to police reports, William Merrifield was arrested in 2009 for driving with a suspended license after he caused an accident. He was taken to jail, but his daughter claims he wasn't given the proper medicine to treat his diabetes and other medical conditions.
His daughter lives in California, but Action News sent her a few questions that she answered and posted on Youtube.
"My father was treated very poorly, inhumanely, and neglected to the point that he died...During a two week period, my father lost 30 pounds...The sheriff's office told me my father received medical care he needed. They were a jail. They were overcrowded," said Kerrie Merrifield.
Merrifield died 2 weeks after being arrested. A spokesperson for the City of Jacksonville says they are aware of the pending lawsuit but says, "As the City of Jacksonville, it's our policy not to comment on pending lawsuits."
Until there is a resolution in the case, Merrifield's daughter will keep fighting. "I just look at pictures and think of my dad. I just miss him. There's no words to say how much I miss my father," said Merrifield.
Merrifield says this isn't about money. She wants the truth about what happened. She's seeking at least $15,000 in damages.
