JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Your personal medical information may be for sale.

Action News found seemingly private information about health ailments and medicine you take available for purchase from data brokers.

Those organizations compile the data through tracked purchases, surveys, even discount drug cards used.

The companies compile the information by location, health issue, zip code, or even age to sell to other companies.

Action News purchased some of this personal information from a data broker found on the internet. We wanted to show how easy it is to purchase.

We went door to door, asking people about the information we found.  Some people were upset their information was out there.  Others were confused the information is wrong.

Privacy experts say you don't have any protection in the matter and you can’t even correct their mistakes.

If you don't opt out of your information being sold or if the company doesn't alert you that it will not sell it, expect it to get out.

Last November the General Accountability Office, think of them as the investigative arm of congress, released a report calling for a federal law to govern data brokers.  No law has been passed.

Action News will continue to follow any progress.
