AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. -- A soccer mom is facing charges for essentially stealing from kids.

Ronee Malama, 37, is in jail after police said she embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from the Amelia Island Youth Soccer League.

"She seemed nice enough," said former neighbor Edward Cameron.

Malama has been arrested twice this year for allegedly stealing money from two separate entities.

According to Fernandina Beach Police, her first arrest was earlier this year for theft from the Nassau County Health Department. She's accused of stealing money from her co-workers purses.

Now she faces new charges for embezzlement from the Amelia Island Youth Soccer League.

"How could you steal from the kids? You know?" Cameron said.

Police said Malama was the registrar of the league. And then, a series of financial irregulars popped up. Action News is told the registration money paid for by check for more than 500 kids disappeared.

Police went through more than 1,000 pages of bank and business records. Investigators determined Malama allegedly took $60,000 from the soccer program over two years.

"She was getting the checks and then I guess she was depositing them in her own account. I don't really know how she did it," Cameron said. "The money's really going to hurt them that they've lost."

Cameron said Malama had been renting a home in his Isle De Mai neighborhood up until six months ago. And he said she tried purchasing another home here but at the last minute the sale fell through.

He said she's due her day in court before he makes judgement but if it's true, said she isn't setting a good example for her own two kids.

"Bad example. Especially when you're little," he said.

Action News Did reach out to the soccer program. The vice president of the board said they don't want to comment publicly because they don't know all the details of the investigation.

He confirmed Malama's kids did play soccer -- but he wasn't sure if they are currently registered.

Police tell Action News another $23,000 in cash is missing -- but that is harder to trace back.

Malama is currently behind bars on a $75,002 bond.
