SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - A judge has set a tentative trial date next year for the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with fatally shooting Trayvon Martin.

Judge Debra S. Nelson set June 10 as the start of George Zimmerman's trial on a second-degree murder charge. Zimmerman claims the February shooting of the 17-year-old Martin was self-defense.

Zimmerman's defense team tweeted after the hearing that they will likely ask for a "stand your ground" hearing in April or May. If the judge were to side with Zimmerman at the hearing, the murder charge would be dismissed and there would be no trial.

It was Nelson's first hearing in the case. An appeals court removed the previous judge, saying he made disparaging remarks about Zimmerman's character.

Those charges need to be dismissed! Zimmerman, like many others who wish to have a SAFE community volunteered their time and made this sacrifice for their neighbors. This bogas situation was media driven and has not permitted all the background facts of Martin's REAL character be admissable. This entire travesty of justice is undermining the legal standing of self protection and that of protecting others and their property. It has been convincing that Martin had the upper hand and physically beat Zimmerman. All of Martin's actions during the previous two or three years indicate his aggressive nature and dislike of elders and those in authority, not to mention his tendency to steal. The only outcome of continuing to try Zimmerman will only empower those desiring to break our laws. Not to mention wasting our taxes, which could be better spent hiring police for our streets.
