CONYERS, Ga. (
WSB-TV) -- Firefighters are investigating a Conyers house fire that killed four children.
The fire happened Tuesday on Pinedale Circle around 11 p.m.
Officials said firefighters arrived at the scene within 30 seconds of the call. Flames were shooting out the second-story windows and the stairs were on fire. Inside, they found the bodies of four children. Family members identified the children as 8-month-old Deon Jr., Amoni, 3, DeShawn, 7 and Ah'Dariya, 9.
Neighbors said the children's mother, Reba Glass, threw her 6-year-old child out the window.
Neighbors said Glass tried to save the others, but the flames were too big.
"Luckily, she threw them out and I think she jumped out and tried to go back in, and then the burns. They say her skin was just coming off," neighbor Leslie Slater said.
Neighbors also tried to knock out windows to save the kids, who were trapped upstairs in two rooms.
"We started telling them, 'Jump out the window, jump out the window.' We kept hearing something like banging on the window, but they didn't jump," said Lamonta Stroud, an 18-year-old neighbor.
Neighbors said this is a painful loss for the community.
Firefighters said the 6-year-old survivor has minor injuries.Family members identified him as Darnell Jr.
A grandmother inside the home was not injured.
Authorities said the mother was initially airlifted to an area hospital, but the medic helicopter had to turn around because of high winds. Glass is in the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital. Channel 2's Richard Elliot, who tracked down a relative at the scene, said she suffered second- and third-degree burns to more than 40 percent of her body.
"We're saddened. We're going to do everything we can in Rockdale County to help," said Rockdale County Commisson chairman Richard Oden.
Fire investigators, police, state fire marshals and ATF agents are still at the scene of the fire working to determine the cause.
