JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Returning items can be trickier than you might think. That free gift you got could end up costing you money.

Electronics are really tricky because there are restocking fees associated with electronics. Many retailers will charge you a portion of the purchase price, 15 or 20 percent, whether you've opened it or not.

Consumer Reports recommends checking the store's return policy before heading out the door.

Some tips for a successful return:

- Gift receipts will make the transaction easier and some stores won't allow you to make a return without one.
- Not all purchases made online can be returned to physical stores.
- If items were purchased at a store's outlet, they may not be returnable.
- If an item comes with a free gift, you may need to bring the freebie back also.
