JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Red light cameras at 17 different intersections will begin working Wednesday.

Sheriff John Rutherford told Action News that each violation will cost $158. And you better pay on time.

The first notice carries no penalty points. But if you ignore it, the fine increases to $274 and three points are assessed against your license.

Once the cameras are live, there will be a 30-day grace period. If the camera catches you running a red light inside that window, you'll get a letter of warning in the mail. After 30 days, you get a ticket.

The taxpayers are not paying for the cameras. They will be funded by the violations.

This will be a good deterrent and work as long as the lights are cycling properly. I may not be the "best" driver ever, I am vigilant about the traffic lights. Also, I follow the posted speed limits. I cannot afford a ticket.
