DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- There are a bunch of nervous drivers, crew members and car owners looking for a couple more miles per hour at Daytona International Speedway. The fight to make the field commences around 2:17 with the first of two Budweiser 150 Duels.

Danica Patrick and Jeff Gordon go off up front, leading the chase for spots 3 through 32 in Sundays 500. They will start 1-2 in the 500 after turning the fastest laps in qualifying, but this afternoon usually offers up the best insight for the cars and drivers who have the best chance of winning the Great American Race.

Sterling Marlin, a two-time Daytona 500 champion, used to love to say two things about racing. "You gotta drive it like you stole it," and "we are just glad we brought the car back with all four fenders and all four tires."

Sunday is for driving it like they stole it.  Thursday is for bringing the teams number one car back to the shop in one piece.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The excitement is building for the 55th running of the Daytona 500. Danica Patrick will start up front Sunday. How the first woman to ever win a NASCAR pole performs in the Duels today will tell us if she is ready to be a factor in the 500.

[SPECIAL SECTION: VICTORY LANE]

The other big thing to watch is how the new Gen 6 car does. The new ride received rave reviews in the early going, but there have been a number of wrecks in practice that has the drivers scratching their heads. Ryan Newman spun out on Wednesday and said he had no idea how it happened.

I told my dad the same thing when I dinged my moms Oldsmobile 88 back in high school. He didn't believe me, but I believe Newman because they just have not had enough "seat" time to figure out how to drive in the pack.

Winning the pole is no guarantee of a trip to Victory Lane on Sunday. Nine of the previous fifty four pole winners have gone on to win the race. That's 15-percent. Check out tonight on Action News live from Victory Lane.
